Customer image upload

An image field lets the customer attach their own picture — a photo to engrave on a pendant, a logo for a stamp, a pet portrait for a tag.

The upload is 100% native Shopify: the field is a standard file input attached to the theme’s product form. When the customer adds to cart, Shopify itself uploads the file and attaches its URL to the cart line as a property. The app’s servers never receive or store the file.

This design has practical consequences:

  • It works with themes’ AJAX carts (the file rides along with the form data).
  • The image is hosted on Shopify’s CDN, with the URL visible in the order.
  • There is nothing to configure, no storage quota in the app, no extra privacy surface — see Data & privacy.
Option Detail
Label Shown above the upload button and used as the order property name.
Maximum file size Configurable from 1 to 20 MB. Oversized files show a translated error before submission.
Required Supported — add-to-cart is blocked until a file is chosen.

After choosing a file, the customer sees a thumbnail of their image next to the field.

In the app’s Orders pages (detail view and batch print sheets), uploaded files appear as clickable links so your workshop can open the original image at full resolution.
