Going live takes two steps in two places: save your rules in the app, then activate the app embed in the theme editor. Both are required — the gate only shows when the settings are enabled and the embed is active.

Step 1 — Configure and save in the app

On the app’s Home page:

1. Turn on Enable age verification on my storefront.
2. Pick a Verification method — Yes / No confirmation or Date of birth (see Verification methods).
3. Set the Minimum age (default 18, accepted range 1–129).
4. Set Remember the visitor’s choice for (days) — how long a shopper who passed stays verified before being asked again. Default 30 days; 0 means ask again on their next browsing session.
5. Click Save.

Pro subscribers can also configure targeting, redirects, per-country ages and more under Advanced (Pro) — each option has its own guide in the sidebar.

Step 2 — Activate the app embed in your theme

The storefront gate is a theme app embed. Shopify requires embeds to be switched on from the theme editor — apps cannot do this for you:

1. On the app’s Home page, click Activate in theme editor. This opens your current theme’s editor with the Optan Age Verification embed pre-selected.
2. Make sure the embed’s toggle is on.
3. Click Save in the theme editor.

Two saves, two places

Saving in the app does not save the theme, and vice versa. If the gate doesn’t appear, the most common cause is a missed save on one side — see Troubleshooting.

Using multiple themes?

The embed is per-theme. If you publish a different theme later, activate the embed in that theme too.

Step 3 — Check your storefront

Open your storefront in a new tab. The age gate should appear as a full-screen overlay. Choose I am old enough to enter — and note that your choice is now remembered, so the gate won’t show for you again until the remember period expires. To make it show again for testing, see Test your gate.
